August nights at Subaru Park are always electrifying. But this past game? Oh, it was a whole different kind of electric.
When the Philadelphia Union squared off against Querétaro, everyone knew we were in for a wild ride. The early energy was palpable. Our Boys in Blue did not disappoint as Bueno found the net and gave the Union a lead that had all of section 120 and beyond on their feet.
But as soccer often reminds us, the tide can turn at any moment.
Querétaro pushed back and late in the second half, they evened the score. It felt like every breath was held as the minutes ticked away; the atmosphere thick with tension and anticipation. Fiesty? That might be an understatement. Challenges flew in, cards popped out. The referee seemed to have an itchy pocket, with yellows flashing left and right, and even a red to Querétaro, leaving them a man down.
Then, when it seemed all hope was dwindling, and the prospect of another draw was looming, up stepped Chris Donovan. Deep into stoppage time, he gave us a moment to cherish forever - the game-winning goal that now sets up a mouthwatering semi-final clash against Inter Miami.
And as if that wasn't enough excitement, we've got one more thing to look forward to: Lionel Messi. That's right, the GOAT himself will grace Subaru Park with his presence. It’s surreal to think that we'll witness the magic of Messi right in our backyard. For long-time soccer fans, and even for the newest members of our Union family, this is a dream. The world's best, here in Philly.
So, gear up, Union faithful. We've got Messi coming to town, and the Boys in Blue are on fire. The next match is set to be legendary, and you better believe section 120 will be leading the charge.
Doop on!
